Workshop Arranged and Coordinated by Gail Ireland
Here's some info from Nina Tatarowicz on the upcoming workshops in March. Due to March having 5 Saturdays, there will be TWO workshop weekends--the first and fifth Saturdays.
Here's Nina's info. Details on specific times will follow. GK
Here is my idea for the next workshops. They expand on the idea that I initiated with the workshops in January that had to do with Grounding and Elasticity. I think it would be a good idea to continue in line of focus so that the community really feels that they are able to harness the technique that I am introducing.
This is a very modern concept of tango, one that explores the embrace as an energy field, not a static structure. Dancers of all levels, especially more advanced dancers that are looking for new ways to expand their horizons, should be encouraged to participate. Hopefully we can get a nice turnout from Cedar Rapids as well! Both workshop days will have a Part I and Part II with Practicas directly following each part. Part I will establish the ground work foundation of the concept, and Part II incorporates more complex movement patterns and musicality emphasis.
The improvisational possibilities in Tango are endless, but even more exciting when we can develop the sensitivity to feel the subtleties exchanged in the embrace. This double workshop experience will show you how to both direct and respond to these subtleties with quickness and ease. Create sensual moments as you come together from open to close embrace, or passionate break-aways that flare into dynamic sequences. Train your body to harness this energy exchange technique, and feel your dance reach new heights!
Direct and respond to energy exchanges with quickness and ease to be constantly inventing your dance together with your partner from the subtlest communication. Specific focus on how to close and open the embrace with a distinctive musical and dynamic flow by developing these energetic transitions.
Developing spiral movement as the backbone of our tango lead/follow so that we move organically together. Incorporating our new energy exchange transitions with this spiral movement to flesh out familiar patterns into killer inventions and improvisation both close and open.
As the material is closely related, it is recommended, though not mandatory, to take both Parts I and II of the workshops each day for the full experience.

Friends,
The second Saturday workshop with Nina Tatarowicz will be moved from this Saturday (Feb 23) to Saturday March 1. I hope this does not cause any scheduling problems for participants. From my point of view, its one week closer to spring, and that's got to be good.
This Friday, February 22, there will be a milonga at Wesley Center, (120 N. Dubuque St) beginning at 7:00 pm. Bring a snack, a bottle of vino, a friend you always thought would like tango.
I'm just thinking of someone who used to come to tango events, but I haven't seen lately. Where did you go? Will you come back? ; ) BTW, Judy Buline sends greetings from San Diego....
See you Friday?
Gail
More details on workshop specifics for March 1 date as they become known.
Friends,
This year I believe will mark the point at which we all moved forward by leaps and bounds in our dance technique. Nina Tatarowicz has agreed to come to Iowa City from Chicago to teach a series of classes that build on each other in a systematic way. Each workshop will take place at the Wesley Center, 120 N. Dubuque Street, from noon to 5:00 pm on the last Saturday of the month, and we are beginning with a three-month series on January 26, February 23, and March 29, 2008.
The format is a little different than in the past. Mornings are reserved for private lessons. There will be two extra-long classes instead of three, each followed by a practica. At the end of each class students will be given a written description of the techniques covered in that class.
Following each workshop there will be a weekly practica every Friday at 7 pm to review what we learned. On the last weekend (usually 4th, 5th in Mar) the Friday practica will become a milonga; then classes the next day (Saturday).
We've met people who have great technique after dancing tango for only a couple months, haven't we? How do they do it? This is how. Systematic instruction and repetition, and practice at least once a week. If this system works as well for us as I think it will, we have the option to continue with lessons from Nina beyond March. Everything depends on participation.
Noon: ALL LEVELS: Get your GED of Tango: Grounding, Elasticity & a Directable leg We will work on establishing a solid connection to the floor, then using this connection along with an connected yet malleable frame to generate our lead and follow technique. Followers will learn to develop a toned sense of release in their free leg so that it is directable by the lead, and incorporate this technique into basic tango steps to change the dynamics and quality of movement.
1:45-2:15 pm: PRACTICA
2:15-2:30 pm: BREAK
2:30 pm: INT/ADV: Applying your GED to more complex tango elements, varying the embrace and incorporating musical phrasing.

Nina's vision of Argentine tango encompasses its entire spectrum, from dance to poetry, art, music and cultural significance.
For more than three years she lived in Buenos Aires, providing her with an intensive training ground for her tango while she absorbed the richness of the culture that now embodies her dance.
An accomplished leader and follower, Nina translates the intrigue of tango into a language that is accessible to all.
Emphasizing an intimate embrace and relaxed, organic body movement, she provides her students with a solid foundation in technique and dance structure. She encourages their creativity and the expression of their own unique personality in the dance.
Nina returns often to Buenos Aires with opportunities to teach and perform, and currently is based in the Chicago area as a teacher, dancer, choreographer and event organizer.
