Let's talk!

We live in Mount Vernon, Iowa, a great little town near Cedar Rapids (an industrial and shopping center) and Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa. Since she graduated from Macalester College, Cassie lives and works in New York City. She runs marathons; wish I could do that. Christy graduated in journalism from the University of Kansas and lives and works in Cedar Rapids.

a man of faith

I'm serious about spirituality. I practice centering prayer. We attend St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, where I'm a cantor. I like to participate in small group discussions and faith sharing. Sharon and I recently graduated from the archdiocesan Lay Formation program.

From time to time I compose music.

a worker

I am self-employed and teach part-time at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. See my resume (Adobe PDF).

a volunteer leader

I'm active in the IEEE (a professional society for electrical, computer, and software engineers), where I served as Cedar Rapids Section chairman during 1996-97. In 1997 I initiated ProCon, the Section's annual professional development conference for engineers and technical professionals, and continue as chair. The seventh annual ProCon will be held on April 27, 2004.

I'm also active in the local chapter of the Project Management Institute and currently serve as VP Communications. I'm a former Toastmaster (see Toastmasters International). In that communication and leadership organization, besides improving my public speaking skills, I gained confidence, learned how to be a leader, and  made great friendships. See the club web page, Downtowners Toastmasters Club #684.

a seeker after growth and integration

I believe life and work can and should be integrated. Authors Thomas Keating, David Steindl-Rast, Henri Nouwen, Geoff Bellman, Peter Block,  Stephen Covey, David Whyte and Thomas Moore have been great influences in confirming that belief.

I'm also very interested in psychological type. See also the Whole Person Affirmation List.
