Who am I? My gut response is, who cares? But in the context of this page, I realize that a reader deserves to know the qualifications of the supposed experts. It's just too easy to put up a page and spout off and claim to know it all!
So first off, I'm a TradeWars Player who started out on a local, one-line BBS. Not really a huge one either, just a lad who left his computer on. He really only had four or five callers who were regulars. So you see how this environment was both safe/non threatening and boring.
I remember colonizing in my ISS, building citadels with no real plan or even a need, just to try it out. With no enemies, things got dull quickly. I had my citadel to level 1 and was waiting for it to upgrade when a new player logged on one day.
He had over 1K in ranking on his first day, and to my suprise, his align was evil! The first real evil player I had yet seen, I really didn't even understand how he had made his align go negative. And further, why would someone want to do such a thing? Was he just antagonistic or was there an advantage to being evil? I shrugged mentally, as I had set up my home sector quite well, with over 5,000 fighters deployed in the sector above my planet, I felt quite safe.
I really never knew what hit me. I logged on one day, and got the dread message, "Your Imperial StarShip was destroyed by FatMan, you must wait two days to get a new ship!" Longest two days of my life!
When I finally returned, my home sector was NavHazard, including the StarPort I had constructed! I quickly learned the extent of FatMan's pillaging, TOTAL!
Such a howl I put up! Universal announcements of 'Cheater' and many others too foul to repeat. I had been taught a lesson. Crime Pays!
