When I dance, I cannot judge, I cannot hate, I cannot separate myself from life. I can only be joyful and whole; that is why I dance.-Hans Bos

You are receiving this e-mail because you have attended a Baile Latino class at CSPS or have expressed interest in Latin Dance. Baile Latino is a group whose purpose is to create community through the love and sharing of Latin dance.

LAST WEEKLY E-MAIL: This is the last email that I will be sending from my 8 year old computer using dial-up internet service and this email address. As you all know, it is very time consuming to change computer systems, etc. but eventually I hope this will make communication easier. Please bookmark our website and check it constantly. http://www.bailelatino.org/

GRATITUDE:
I’m full of it. thankfulness, that is. Without the tireless effort of my niece Ananda and our dear friend, Allen Chavis there would be no web site. I am also thankful to Darryl Carter for helping me to start Baile Latino. Three years ago, I did not have enough knowledge to teach salsa and I learned so much teaching along side him. I’m thankful to Ananda for stepping in to help teach when Darryl no longer had time to teach. I’m grateful to Modei Akyea for giving me a solid foundation in salsa and to all my subsequent teachers including my daughter Laurel and all of her wonderful friends in Puerto Rico. I’m thankful to all of you who have attended classes and other events as well volunteering time and words of encouragement, making a salsa community possible in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I learn about life and dance from each and every one of you and for that I am most grateful. And a heartfelt thanks to Legion Arts at CSPS and Coe College who have provided places where we can learn and practice. -Gloria

GEOFFREY’S BIO:
Geoffrey Spain was introduced to salsa in the summer of 1999 during a summer bridge program at Iowa State University. One of his friends, Anthony Persaud, showed him the basics and they immediately began to practice together. Money was a problem for the two hopeful salseros, so they searched the internet for any free video clips from salsa instructional videos or salsa club scenes. Geoffrey's first experience dancing salsa at a party began with the girl saying "You're not going to step on my feet are you?" He said no and they began dancing. For Geoffrey, the dance was going great. He could only do the basic step and was feeling really good about it, but as soon as he looked up at his partner, he noticed that she looked very bored and anxious to stop. From then on Geoffrey's goal has been to give the lady a non-stop, unpredictable, and memorable dancing experience for every song. Today, Geoffrey is an instructor for "Descarga," a latin dance club at Iowa State where he focuses on teaching very efficient and effortless-looking leading techniques along with some crazy footwork patterns here and there. He has also begun performing salsa and other Latin-American folk dances around Iowa in his second club "OLaS" (Organization of Latino Students). Geoffrey's influences include Modei Akyea, Ignacio, Juan Matos, Frankie Martinez, Troy Anthony, Milton Cobo, Super Mario, and Gordon Neil. Geoffrey is currently putting together a piece to be performed at the Chicago International Salsa Congress in February. We are thrilled that he is coming all the way from Ames to share his passion and skills.
