The class is for those with no dance experience at all and for those with extensive dance experience, but no tango background. Close embrace has been the traditional and vastly predominant style of tango danced for the last 80 years or so in Buenos Aires & Montevideo. It values connection and communication, personal experience, rhythmic exploration, personal style, and improvisation coming from authentic responses to the music, our partner and the mood of the moment, and devalues complicated step patterns and the appreciation of onlookers. People taking these classes will learn a credible tango for social dance by the time we finish, and have a good foundation for their continuing tango education. This means they will: -- feel relaxed and comfortable in close embrace -- lead or follow the walk, do turns and other simple figures -- understand the basic rhythmic structures of tango -- inject emotional content into their dance -- know the important orchestras of the Golden Age of Tango -- navigate crowded dance floors effectively -- behave politely within social tango circles The course costs $60 for 10 lessons, payable in advance, with full-time students with up to date IDs receiving a 50% discount. You don't need to have your own partner, but I will keep the number of men and women more or less in balance. After the class there is free practice time until 5:00 PM. I'll help people catch up on missed classes as my schedule allows. People taking this class should wear snug fitting shoes with closed toes (this is a beginner class; wear open toed shoes at your own risk), with good arch support and flexible, leather soles allowing them to step and pivot easily. Women needn't wear high heels unless they are comfortable in them. Please let me know you are coming, by calling me at 641-919-1991 or semding me email at ceverett@ceverett.com. -- Christopher L.
