Hello everyone,
Last year, Tomas' visit to Iowa was highly successful. We had over 50 people in the Friday night beginner's class, over 30 people took the remaining classes on Saturday and Sunday, and a good time was had by all.
So, while I was down in Buenos Aires minding my own business, Tomas emails me to let me know he can fit me into his schedule, and on top of that can bring his new partner, the fabulous Noel Strazza, who partnered the great Pablo Veron for years. What can I say, he twisted my arm, and before I could stop myself I blurted out, "Yes, please come!"
Now that I'm back in the States from my Summer trip to Buenos Aires, I can devote some time and attention to getting things set up.
What will we learn this time? Well, Tomas' Fundamentals for Everybody class is one of the best of its kind, so Friday night, we'll do that again, and then we'll dance till midnight.
Saturday, we'll start with a class called "Musicality: technique and interpretation". Musicality is the art of listening to and interpreting the music in your dance. Then we'll turn to a class on giros, "Turns and Twirls". Turns are a fundamental element of the dance, and constant practice of turns does very wonderful things for your dance. That evening, we'll have a special treat before the milonga, a tango show from Tomas and Noel, that I'll be publicizing to people outside the tango community.
Then Sunday, we'll work with all new material that Tomas and Noel have created. First, a class on Paradas and Arranques, where one partner seemingly stops and/or sends their partners feet moving with their foot. We end the workshop with a nice energizing class on Milonga.
Tomas Howlin
A native of Buenos Aires, Tomas brings and shares his 12 years teaching and performing in Argentina, North America and Europe. He dances and teaches authentic Argentine Tango and has been privileged to study with some of the greatest teachers of all time. His knowledge and pedagogy is unique and exceptional. He believes in a natural, comfortable and thoughtful tango; a way of dancing unique for each person. Currently one of the most popular teachers in North America, Tomas is appreciated for his sharp eye, gentle humor and accessibility.
Noel Strazza
Born in Buenos Aires, Noel studied contemporary dance as a youth. A member of the Contemporary Dance Ballet of the theatre San Martin 1995 to 1998, she also worked there as assistant choreographer. She began dancing Argentine Tango in 1997 and taught and performed with the famous Pablo Veron in Europe, Australia, Asia and North America from 2000 to 2005. Noel now lives in Montreal where she regularly performs, choreographs and teaches with Tomas.
