Education Program

Since its founding in 1973, the Emma Goldman Clinic has supported an active education program. Knowledge is the base of empowerment, and the clinic takes a proactive role in educating the community about reproduction, sexualtiy, and women's health care issues. While our clinical services are primarily for women, adolescents, and teen females, the educational services are designed to involve males and females of all ages.

Educating Teens
Based on the needs identified by schools or community organizations, Clinic educators develop programs for teens that involve young people in a positive learning experience about physical and emotional aspects of reproductive health and human sexuality.

Safer Sex Kits
Developed by Emma Goldman Clinic staff, Safer Sex Kits contain the latest information on reproductive health, birth control methods, and sexually transmitted diseases. Actual birth control devices are attached to the informational cards providing educators and counselors with a useful hands-on tool to familiarize teens with their options.

Iowa Juvenile Home Project
The Iowa Juvenile home is a residential incarceration facility for female teens. An Emma Goldman Clinic nurse practitioner meets with residents at the facility to conduct one-on-one clinically based counseling sessions. In addition to providing reproductive health and contraceptive information, the session is used to help the teen develop a plan for responsible sexuality.

Internet services
World Wide Web Site - In response to the popularity of the Safer Sex Kits, the Clinic established a World Wide Web Site to make information on birth control and sexually transmitted diseases readily available. The site also contains information about the Clinic's services and philosophy.
Legislative Alerts - The Clinic distributes alerts on topics affecting women's health and reproductive rights via e-mail. Alerts are used to promote awareness on pressing legislative issues and to share information regarding important reproductive health issues.

Menopause Education
Not long ago, menopause was a topic that wasn't discussed in public. Women were isolated as they experienced this major biological shift. Presentations offered by the Clinic focus on the wide range of physical and emotional effects of menopause and the various health care options women may choose.
