Free Walk-In Services
Every day we provide services for women from all over Iowa and neighboring
states. For many women, finding the funds for services is a tremendous obstacle.
A woman's ability to pay is often limited by low income, no credit, a dangerous
home situation or the inability to use family insurance.
The Emma Goldman Clinic is committed to helping ALL women receive quality
reproductive health care. The following free services are offered on a walk-in
basis:
- Pregnancy testing and options counseling
- Prenatal and adoption referrals
- Blood pressure checks
- Birth control consultations
- Sexually transmitted disease consultations
We have also established an Access Fund that reduces fees for low income
women or provides small loans to help women distribute the cost of their
health care over a longer period of time.
The Community Education Program includes:
- Adolescent sexuality education presentations
- Adolescent pregnancy prevention billboard campaign
- Work with incarcerated teens at the Iowa Juvenile Home
- Production and distribution of adolescent safer sex kits
- Outreach work in coalition with other community health organizations
- Speaking engagements on a wide range of reproductive health issues
- Educational displays at health fairs and community events
- Maintaining a reproductive health resource library
- Publication of the following work: The Cervical Cap Handbook, Fertility
Awareness, and A Woman's Guide to Bladder Infections
Massage Services
We have three massage therapists on staff:
Chris is trained in intermediate and advanced Swedish massage and incorporates
other massage techniques according to the needs of the client. Chris has
experience with pain management, having worked at the Pain Treatment Center
in Cedar Rapids. She uses heat therapy and oil or lotion to
provide a relaxing massage.
Jean specializes in Jin Shin Jyutsu, a type of energy work that tunes the
body's healing systems by gently holding different points on the body.
Mary is trained in Shiatsu, a Japanese form of acupressure, and incorporates
neuromuscular and cranio-sacral techniques in her full body treatment. Mary
uses thumb and finger pressure and muscle isolation to open blockages in
the muscle, leaving the recipient feeling refreshed and relaxed.
Mission Statement
The Emma Goldman Clinic is a non-profit organization founded and operated
by women. We exist to empower women in all life stages through the provision
of quality reproductive health care, active education and the promotion
of women's voices in public policy. We believe that controlling our bodies
and health is integral to establishing the quality of our lives. We are
actively committed to the struggle to end all forms of oppression by acknowledging
and celebrating diversity.
We promote participatory health care, informed decision making, client rights,
advocacy for women, and expansion and support of women's choices. Our goals
are inspired by our belief in the larger ideals of feminist philosophy:
political, economic, and social equality.
Commitment to Diversity
The Emma Goldman Clinic is committed to participating in the struggle to
end all forms of oppression based on:
- Ableism
- Ageism
- Body Size
- Ethnic or National Origin
- Racism
- Religion
- Sexism
- Sexual Preference
We acknowledge that oppression can be perpetuated on both the individual
and institutional level. Institutionally, we are actively committed to staff
diversity in employment policies and practices. We strive to provide a work
place in which diversity is acknowledged and encouraged. We strive to increase
economic, geographic, structural and language accessibility. We offer non-judgmental
services to all women.
Individually, we are committed to developing and maintaining a staff which
prioritizes an awareness of and respect for individual and cultural differences.
To this end, we integrate education about cultural diversity in our staff
training and through ongoing in-service programs.
