Residence

This building stands directly south of the main church. It is constructed from brick and was built in 1868. Its use was always as a wohnhaus, or residence.

I was unable to find out a lot if information about the house itself. I know that the Foerstner and Heiterman families lived here in the past. It is still standing and being used as a private residence.

On thing about Amana homes that is unique is that they are not true two-story buildings. The are actually one and one-half stories tall. If one looks at the buildings closely, most will have smaller windows upstairs and the second story is bisected by the roof line. The second floor ceilings in many of the homes are slanted at the edges corresponding with the slope of the roof. The attics in these buildings are surprisingly large and take up the area under the peak of the roof.

Most homes and buildings also had two brick chimneys. There are also what I call sparrow boxes on the corner of the roof edges. Most buildings have some sort of extension attached, whether it be a garage, woodshed, living quarters, or wash house. All of these things are unique qualities about Amana homes.
