Residence

This building was communally used as living quarters. It was at the southern edge of the village (and still is!). It was made of local brick and constructed in 1871. It is still standing and is a private residence.

This was built as a residence for Philipina Wiswasser. There have, of course, been other families that lived here. It is unheard of that a family has been the sole resident within the same house for all time. The only that comes close is the Shoup family in South Amana.

My oma has many great stories about a woman that used to live here. She was known to bend her elbow from time to time. This made her the object of both rumor and attention in the small village. In fact, I am told that the hedges planted between the store and along the sidewalk heading toward this house were put there so she could find her way home at night! I'm sure my oma wouldn't appreciate me sharing that story. She never wanted me to share any stories, but that is what makes a place interesting. There are many other stories about this woman, but none will find their way here!
