This building was made of brick in 1865. It has always been the only brick granary in the Amana Colonies. It was used as a grain storage facility into the 1920's. After that, it had varied uses and was also vacant. It served as a garage for the farm house to the south for a number of years. It was renovated in the 1980's and is now the Granary Emporium. This business deals in antiques and collectibles.
As was typical of other fructhaus (granary) structures, the grain was stored in the upper story. There was an opening on both the east and west side of the building that allowed passage from one side to the other. Chutes from the ceiling of this passage could load grain into the wagons below.
The lower level of this building had various uses. It was used for storage of farm implements and also had stalls on the north end. My guess is that these held horses at one time, though why the horse barn was not used for this I don't know.
The building is now a business, as mentioned before. It is fortunate that it was renovated, for it had been vacant for as long as I have been alive. Usually if this is the case, the buildings are torn down. This was the case in the hog barn and some of the other buildings in South. I am certain that many other buildings in the Colonies met their fate in a similar fashion.
