Berger's Chicken House
Also known as Kippenhahn's chicken house, you would
have to really search to find someone that has living memory of either
of these names. This was an ordinary chicken house used by the kitchen
north of it. It is made of brick, and is a fairly large example of
a chicken house. It is also known to some as the sand house.
I assume that it is called this for obvious reasons. From the information
that I was able to gather, the sand was used for the chickens.
I was unable to find the date that it was built.
I would guess that it was built about the smae time as the kitchen that
used it. If that guess is correct, it puts the building date around
1867.
I tihnk that if you are planning a tour of the Amanas,
it is this kind of info that you should find out. Unfortunatly, very
few of the people that you talk to remember or even knew this type of information
to begin with. I would strongly suggest that you visit one of the
Amana Heritage Society sites. There are several in the Amanas (in
South, Middle, Main Amana, and Homestead). These, in my opinion,
give the best representation from a historical stand point. You can
also get a good start at the Amana Visitor Center located between Middle
Amana and Main Amana near the Lily Lake.
