Kinderschule

This small brick building was built in 1869. Its communal use was as a preschool or day care center. Here is a little background information about child care in the Amanas.

After having a baby, the new mother was relieved of all other duties for a time. This was usually about three years. From there, the child would go to Kinderschule and then regular school. Grandparents also played an important role in raising the child. Sometimes parents opted to have the grandparents watch their children until they were school aged.

This particular Kinderschule usually had ten to fifteen children attending it. These were between the ages of three and five. This daycare was similar to the daycares of today. The students had toys to play with, beds to nap in, books, and they followed a curriculum to prepare them for school.

After "the change", this building was used as a radio shop. It also was a storage shed. It has since been purchased and somewhat restored. It is now privately owned.
