Tailorshop and Residence

This building was built in 1865 from the local brick. It is made in typical style, having a central stairway with rooms on either side. This was one of the tailor shops in town. It was run by "Alte Wittig" (old Mr. Wittig). He worked primarily in one of the north rooms, down stairs. A residence upstairs housed the Baust family, (one of my Oma's sisters married a Baust and lived here). I assume that the other downstairs rooms held Mr. Wittig and his family.

One may think that there wasn't much of a call for formal clothes in a rural, agrarian, closed society. There was a great call, for a suit must be worn to church at this time. Considering the number of services a week, this attire was more a part of everyday life than in other similar communities. It would have been "Alte Wittig" that made these articles for you. This tailor also made pants and other necessities.
