This building was always a "house". Known as a Wohnhaus
(dwelling house), every village had buildings that held several families.
This particular house was built in 1862. It is of brick construction on
a wooden beam frame. It is still standing and is a private residence.
In South Amana before the change (pre-1932), people didn't
have flower beds. It seemed that everything must have some pratical purpose.
Often times, flowers were added as borders to gardens, ledges, and grape trellises.
If you visit South Amana today in the spring or summer, this private property
has a beautiful array of flora. I often see people taking pictures here.
Even though the flowers are not planted in the "old Amana" style, they make
a great highlight for pictures to take home!
I have some fond memories of this property as I look back
upon my childhood. There was an elderly couple that lived in this house.
They also owned the property directly east across highway 220. This couple
were among the most vigilant people in town. They had a large garden on
the east property. They also had many fruit trees and rasberry rows.
As a child, my friends and I would run all over town playing various games.
This was one property that I always avoided running through. I just knew
that I was being watched by one of the couple! Looking back, it makes
me smile thinking of the couple that I once was scared of. Did I say scared?
I... wasn't... scared. And to my friends that ran with me..... you'll
never get me to admit it!
