About Mary Vasey
• Teaching Experience. Mary has over 30 years teaching experience in grades 4, 5, 6 and 8; and as a certified language arts and social studies high school teacher. She was one of the first teachers at Metro High School in Cedar Rapids (an alternative high school), where she taught for 22 years. (Metro was twice recognized by the President of the United States as one of the nation's outstanding schools, and was regularly visited by educators from as far away as Singapore and Latvia.) She was named to the ICCSD Advisory Committee for the Alternative School, was an active, working volunteer in the Yes! for Kids campaign, and has worked as a volunteer in this District. During her teaching career she was always a member of the NEA, ISEA, and CREA.
• Theater Arts Experience.
She
has also worked in the theater and as a writer. She served as guest director
for the Young Footliters of Iowa City and as Metro High School's drama
director, where her plays
have been performed (shown at right as acolades are enjoyed by cast, crew
and the director). She has participated in the Riverside Theater's “Walking
the Wire” as both a monologist and writer, once won a stand-up comedy contest,
is a member of the University Club writers group, and a playwright. One
of her sons, Jason Grubbe, is a professional actor and director.
• Education, and Iowa City Ties. She is a graduate of Iowa City's former University High School, attended the University of Iowa as an undergraduate (where she was a member of the marching group, the Scottish Highlanders) before moving to Colorado with her family where she earned a B.A. degree from Colorado College in Colorado Springs. She has since pursued graduate study at the University of Iowa. (Her father, Wayne Vasey, created and was the first director of the University's School of Social Work -- now located in the building where Mary attended high school.) Mary is an Iowa City resident, married, with three children in the Iowa City area. One of her grandsons currently attends the Iowa City schools.
• International, National
and State Recognition. Mary Vasey was one of the first 12 teachers
selected for the National Faculty, Coalition of Essential Schools. In that
role she worked in five states as an educational consultant and
workshop facilitator. She was selected by the State of Iowa's Department
of Education as one of a small group of teacher-advisers to the Department.
She has made presentations, attended conferences, and consulted with leading
educators in Bulgaria (shown at left, following her presentation, with
a couple of participants), Korea, Switzerland and other foreign countries.
